Knife Sharpeners
Knife sharpeners can leave some roughness from the stone
or, with a little more work, a completely smooth edge. There are many
different gadgets and methods for honing any blade. Sharpening stones
in a workshop should be at least as large as the biggest blade you need
to sharpen.
Knife sharpeners can be as simple as a stone and a guide. There are
also a lot of electric knife sharpeners on the market. These are convenient
and fast but you lose a good amount of the control you do get with manual
sharpening systems.
The stones for knife sharpeners include the use of manufactured abrasives
that have largely taken the place of natural waterstones. Industrial
diamonds are made into diamond hones, also referred to as diamond files.
If you can’t afford stone, manufactured or otherwise, look into
gluing a piece of silicon carbide sandpaper to a block of wood –
it works great.
