Kitchen Knife
A kitchen knife can be any one of several different knives
that can be used to perform different tasks in the kitchen. Chef’s
knife, bread knife, paring knife, boning knife, and cleaver are some
of the most commonly used blades in the kitchen. There are specialized
blades made to suit any food preparation task.
A chef’s knife is the essential kitchen knife. When only one expensive
blade can be afforded, the chef knife is the one that can perform the
most diverse tasks. Chef knives are usually made between 6 and 12 inches
long. If you can afford only one, 8 inches is the perfect size.
Another versatile kitchen knife is the paring knife. It is small and
between 2 ½ and 4 inches long. The blade is a plain edge that
can be used for a variety of delicate tasks such as decorative work,
deveining shellfish, dicing tomatoes, or any other task requiring a
small blade. A bread knife is usually serrated to be effective for cutting
things with a hard crust and soft insides.
